“Matt (Naden, Campion captain) goes in about three weeks so we are in the process of transitioning a new captain.”
“I’m proud of the boys — they keep turning up and doing their best. If they don’t, then we don’t have future cricketers for Poverty Bay cricket.”
Bollywood Stars High School Old Boys skipper Scott Tallott said he hoped that when his team played Kevin Hollis Glass Pirates tomorrow they would put into practice what they learned from last week’s Walker Shield final loss to OBR.
“When we’re chasing a total and getting ourselves into a reasonable position, we need to be more assertive,” said Tallott, whose side lost to OBR by three runs.
“We won’t have Jak Rowe (medium-pace bowler) and Carl Shaw (top-order batsman), and Fish (all-rounder David Salmon) is yet to be confirmed.
“But we’re going into the game in a confident frame of mind, knowing that Pirates will be tough.
“I know they are missing some players (Dane Thompson and Needham brothers Tom and Richie) but they’ve had players out when we’ve played them before, and they’ve beaten us, so I don’t want to say too much about them.”
Pirates captain Brad Reynolds said his side had the edge on HSOB before Christmas, but added, “They’re hitting their stride and will be dangerous in the DJ Barry Cup”.
Pirates could also be without wicketkeeper/batsman Scott Hollinshead — “50/50 at this stage”.
“But no matter who plays, we need everyone to step up and contribute in one way or another.”
Coastal Ultrasound Horouta skipper Blake Taylor said that despite the absence of Clarence Campbell, Phoebe Taylor and Duncan Gibson, he had “plenty of players” for the game against Gisborne Boys’ High School.
“We’re looking to get this part of the season off to a good start, but we’re always wary of Boys’ High,” he said.
“They’ve got some good young players and have been playing in the Super 8 competition in Napier, so they will have had plenty of good practice.”
