Both 20. Both national champions. Both following in the footsteps of their fathers.
Poverty Bay Kayak Club member Quaid Thompson and Gisborne Speedway Club driver Ethan Rees were crowned New Zealand champions at the weekend.
Thompson won the open men’s K1 1000 metres final at the New Zealand canoe sprintchampionships on Lake Karapiro on Saturday morning.
Rees (next picture, wearing the winner’s red sash) won the New Zealand Stockcars Championship at the Eastland Group Raceway track late Saturday night in front of a crowd of thousands.
Thompson added his name to a list of K1 champions that includes his father and Olympic Games great Alan Thompson, who won the title seven times (1981 to 1986, 1994).
Rees followed in the wheel tracks of father and speedway great Peter, who won five titles between the 2002-2003 and 2012-2013 speedway seasons, and brother Asher, who won in 2014-2015.
