Three rolloversThere were three rollovers in the ministock races Saturday night and in one of them a 13-year-old Gisborne girl was taken to hospital after a bad spill on pit corner. Her car hit the wall and rolled, landing heavily on its roof.
The injured girl was kept in the car because of fears of a neck injury. Her car was righted very carefully and pushed out the back of the pits where a fire service crew and St John paramedics came to assist.
The paramedics stabilised the girl, who was in considerable pain, while firefighters cut the roof off her car to get her out.
She was assessed in the hospital's emergency department and underwent some tests on her injured neck and shoulder area.
She was given the all clear from serious injury and discharged. The drivers in the other two rollovers were not injured.
Gisborne sidecar team runners upThe Gisborne sidecar team of Rob Miller and swinger Hamish White, Clive Ireland and Kerwin Arnaboldi, Deane Miller and Pete Steigenberger had to be content with runners up in the New Zealand sidecar teams championship.
They made the final against Hawke's Bay and were winning it when the electrics on Rob Miller's bike failed when he was leading, and the bike stopped. The Hawke's Bay team went through to win it.
The Gisborne team were gutted. "Extremely disappointed" was how Miller put it.
Despite the smallish crowd the Speedway Club were rapt with how the meeting went.
"The meeting ran well with great competition and the ministock racing was among the best I have ever seen," said club vice president Dean Quinn.
"Some of those young drivers are very talented. We are very relieved that our young driver taken to hospital was not seriously hurt and we hope to see her back out on the track shortly."
The Raceway is in action again next weekend with a big 'Demolition Derby' that will include the 100th appearance by veteran Neil Gooch.
In other speedway news Gisborne's Travis Gooch won the North Island streetstock title in Auckland on Saturday night.
