HOCKEY

MORE than 80 goals crashed into the back of the net in seven matches on the LJ Hooker Turf at Harry Barker Reserve last weekend and the women outscored the men nearly two to one.

The women’s teams scored 53 goals, and the men, 28.

The YMP women’s team took no prisoners when they annihilated Te Aowera 19-1.

Two of the defending champions’ players bagged four and two more scored hat-tricks.

Adeline Sanson was the toast of TA when she put them on the scoresheet in a game that was otherwise one-way traffic.

“It certainly shows where YMP are at — they are a scoring machine,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“I think ‘Good on TA’ for scoring a goal against the top women’s team in the competition at this stage.”

GMC Green racked up 10 unanswered goals against GMC Kowhai.

“The Green Machine were obviously made to work for it a bit,” Scragg said.

“I was expecting a bigger scoreline.”

JNL Paikea thumped YMP B 12-0.

“That’s the bounce-back result for Paikea, after their heavy loss to the Green Machine the previous weekend.

“Paikea controlled the whole game.”

Gisborne Girls’ High School made no race of it when they accounted for GMC Gold 11-0.

“That’ll make some of the teams above them a bit wary,” Scragg said.

“That’s a very good score by the students. I cannot wait to see what they produce in the second round of the women’s competition.”

YMP A men scored heavily against their B team, 9-3, Jarrod Carter scoring five goals.

“It was good to see the scoreline down significantly from last time they played each other (15-1 to YMP A), and likewise good to see the B team get three against their much-favoured clubmates.”

LOB A beat LOB Masters 7-2.

“The top team put us to the sword in the first half, but we played better in the second and managed to contain them,” said Scragg, who plays for the Masters.

“The two goals scored for us by Sam Hain were a real highlight.

“Sam has been out of hockey for about six years. The million-mile-an-hour man is back.”

Gisborne Boys’ High School had a good win, too — 6-1 against LOB B.

“To me that was the upset of the week because the last time they met, the scoreline was just 2-1 to Boys’ High and I was expecting it to be close again.

The students led by only one goal at halftime on Friday night.

“But they put LOB B away in the second period, playing some top hockey.”
