United applied consistent pressure that was rewarded when goalscoring machine Josh Adams hit a bullet into the top right corner from just under 23 metres out. That proved to be the winner. United’s defence stood firm while their attack continued creating chances.
“Cup football is always scrappy,” first team player-coach Corey Adams said, adding that the match hadn’t gone according to United’s game plan.
United were without Stu Cranswick, who was sent off in Saturday’s Bailey Cup match against Thistle Massive (Cranswick scored in United’s 3-2 win).
Josh Harris did not travel either, due to sickness.
Pacific Premiership competition resumes this weekend with both Gisborne sides in Hawke’s Bay. Thistle will play Hastings Western Rangers and United will play Port Hill.
