A Manawatu-Wanganui young gun proved too good for Gisborne’s Tessa McDonald on Day 1 of the national women’s interprovincial golf tournament in Hawke’s Bay yesterday.
McDonald, playing at No.1 in the five-woman Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay team, was beaten 4 and 2 by teenager Tara Raj at the Maraenui course.
HBPB,who had a bye in Round 1, were beaten 4-1 by Man-Wang in Round 2.
Clare Choi, at No.3, provided their only individual success — a 5 and 4 win.
No.2 Janie Field lost 7 and 5, No.4 Martha Manaena lost 1-down and No.5 Fiona Ellis lost 5 and 4.
HBPB faced the star-studded defending champion Auckland side this morning and Wellington in the afternoon.
Gisborne teenager Ellen Ball is team reserve for HBPB over the week.
Auckland started the tournament in rampant style. They crushed Otago 5-0, with all matches over by the 14th, then whitewashed Taranaki, including 9 and 8 and 8 and 7 wins.
