POVERTY Bay women’s cricket coach David McDonald rates his team’s chances of winning the Northern Districts T20 trophy as “reasonably high”.
“The ND T20 trophy has eluded us in recent years but we’ve got a strong team, a good blend of experience and youth and we rate our chances asreasonably high,” said McDonald, whose side play Waikato Valley and a Northland/Counties Manukau combination tomorrow and Hamilton on Sunday.
“The fourth and final game of the tournament is against Hamilton in the New Year.”
Northern Spirits players Mel Knight (Bay captain), Kerry Tomlinson and Katie Atarmia (nee Johnson) provide the senior experience. Tessa McDonald returns to the team after a break from the game and brings ND age group and senior Bay women’s experience to the side.
“Nicole Torrie, Tayla Hollis and Lucy McHugh represented ND under-21s at last year’s national tournament as well as representing ND at secondary level,” McDonald said. “Courtney Hayes and Pheobe Taylor represented ND at junior secondary level this year.
“Danielle Crail has been a consistent contributor to the team over many seasons while Emma Hayes brings youthful energy in the field. “Sophie Higgins was unavailable due to injury. Kerry (Tomlinson) will take over as wicketkeeper.”
