CLUB senior hockey makes way this weekend for the Hana Konewa, Hine Te Ariki and Taraipine Tutaki Open Maori Hockey Tournament, which gets under way tomorrow morning.
The two-day event has attracted 12 teams — 10 senior and two of primary-school age.
“The tournament of Hana Konewa, Hine Te Arikiand Taraipine Tutaki was started in 1929-1930 to commemorate the memory of three prestigious wahine,” tournament chairperson Te Mauri Mini Smith said.
“Hockey and rugby matches were played between Waituhi hapu and Te Aowera hapu who were the descendants of those three women.”
The tournament grew over the years with the participation of other teams, from Hiruharama, Uepohatu, Mangatu and Takitimu, among others, she said.
