“The second quarter played virtually goal for goal, too, with Girls’ High picking up a couple of turnovers late in the period to edge ahead by three at halftime (27-24).”
Hall said Girls’ High edged out to a four-goal lead in the third quarter before Lytton got on a six-goal roll to take the lead.
“The score see-sawed through the middle of the quarter, but Girls’ High never let up, picking up a couple of turnovers to end the quarter one goal up (38-37).
“In the final quarter, Girls’ High capitalised on turnovers and extended their lead to six goals with about four minutes left to play.
“Just when we thought Girls’ High were gaining momentum to run away with it, Lytton put the pressure on and picked up crucial turnovers to close the gap.”
Sensing the shift in momentum, the Lytton supporters grew more vocal.
“Each turnover led to great feeds into Manaia Hutana or Honey Mokomoko, who slotted the goals superbly for Lytton,” Hall said.
“They scored the last seven goals in a row to sneak across the finish line and win the game by one.
“Both teams put on fantastic defensive displays and fed their shooters well.”
The result lifted Lytton off the bottom of the premier-grade points table. They are now ahead of Horouta Gold.
YMP Sunshine Brewery now lead the points table on 32, Taste One High School Old Girls are on 29, Whangara 22, Girls’ High 18, Claydens Waikohu 17, Lytton Snr A 9 and Horouta Gold 8.
No netball will be played tomorrow.
Hall said the centre’s best wishes went with the under-17 reps travelling to Palmerston North on Sunday for the under-17 championships.
The premier competition resumes on Wednesday night, when Taste One HSOG play Horouta Gold, and YMP Sunshine Brewery play Whangara.
