BREA Low and Hannah Scholefield brought the curtain down on their Gisborne Trampoline Club careers in style, both winning three medals at the national championships in Christchurch.

“These were their last champs for the club as they prepare to go to university next year,” club coach Doug Callahan said.

“Brea will go to Palmerston North and Hannah, to Wellington. It was good to see them go out with podium places.”

Club trampolinists returned from the three-day, “7am-till-7pm” competition, with 16 medals, including five golds, Callahan said.

“Both girls work very hard in training and deserved their success . . . I was pleased for them.”

Low won silver in the 17-years-and-over trampoline and youth international double mini.

She teamed with Scholefield to come third in the 17yrs-and-over synchronised.

Scholefield was second in the 17yrs-and-over double mini and power tumbling.

“I wanted them to compete but have fun in their last year with the club, and they did,” said Callahan, who took a team of 12 to the South Island.

Young gun Raine Lamont-Milner also came back with three medals, including gold in the 10yr trampoline and 10yrs-and-under synchronised (with Liam Walters), and bronze on youth international double mini.

“It was Liam’s first national competition, and to get gold was pretty special,” Callahan said.

“Liam only joined the club in April, and qualified for the nationals. To then win gold was amazing.

“Raine’s bronze medal adds to his collection in the youth international double mini.”

Seth Miller (11-12yrs) was another competing at this level for the first time and he showed his potential by winning gold with Luke Low in the 15-16yrs synchronised.

“Seth’s only 12 and had to jump up to the higher division to compete with Luke, Brea’s brother,” Callahan said.

“Seth also placed third on double mini in his own age group.

“Danielle van Aswegen did exceptionally well to come third in a big group for the 11-12yrs double mini.

“I was rapt with the performance and Danielle is definitely one to watch next year.”

Gisborne Gymnastic Club’s Baylee Crago added to the local medal haul when he won the 17yrs-and-over power tumbling.

Callahan said New Zealand trampoline representative Kaiya Huta was unable to compete due to head knocks from playing rugby and trampolining.

“It was disappointing for Kaiya, who would surely have won medals, but he’ll come back even stronger next year,” said Callahan, who is looking forward to the arrival of a new “air-power-tumbling mat in the next three months”.

“It’s 25 metres long and 20 centimetres high and will be a great acquisition for the club,” he said.

“There’s a lot of interest in power tumbling and it’s always good for the club to keep improving our equipment.”
