Turanganui a Kiwa Darts Association started a junior and youth mixed darts league in Gisborne on Sunday.

It will run on Sundays for seven weeks every Sunday. Players aged from eight to 18 are being registered with the association and its Tao Matarau junior and youth darts leadership programme.

Eight teams — each made up of five players, one of whom will be reserve — were selected with the aim of having a balance of abilities. Each team would have two youth and three junior players, one being new to the game.

The competition format is that each tie will comprise 21 games — pairs, reverse pairs, singles and reverse singles, with a teams game if the scores are even.

Pairs are the best of three, 501; singles are the best of three, 301, straight starts.

The player’s dart average will be recorded in the singles games. Averages are calculated from every dart thrown in each leg of the three-leg game.
