It’s confirmed — with their six-wicket win against Campion College at Campion yesterday, the Ilminster cricket team became the region’s representative in the National Primary School Cup for 2019.
Ilminster co-captain Alex Shanks won the toss and chose to bowl first, restricting the home team to 53-7 in thenine-a-side T20 format.
Campion captain and opener Hamish Swann was the leading run scorer with 12, second-drop Aiden Armstrong scoring nine runs. Armstrong played great cricket yesterday and was Campion’s Most Valuable Player.
Seamer Tom Rouse (2-3-2) and off-spinner George Gillies (2-7-4) were the visitors’ best bowlers. Gillies then played his second outstanding knock in two days from No.2, hitting seven boundaries in 36 off 24 balls. Campion’s wicket takers were Rhys Grogan (1-9-2.3 overs) and Catherine Moles (1-15-1), Grogan claiming the prize wicket of Gillies courtesy of a brilliant catch by Jacob Douglas at short third man.
Swann was proud of the effort made by his Campion team, particularly the younger players, while their coach Mark Naden said: “Ilminster have a good group of players who definitely earned their win.”
Shanks was rapt with his side’s strong showing away from home: “We bowled and fielded tightly, Nathaniel and George did well again with the bat. It’s now our great honour and opportunity to represent not just Ilminster but also Poverty Bay against out-of-town teams in the future.”
