Gisborne surf lifesaving athletes Olivia Corrin and Cory Taylor head into the next rounds of Australia's premier ironwoman and ironman series hungry for more points.

The third and fourth rounds of the Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series will be staged at Maroubra Beach, Sydney, tomorrow and Sunday.

Last month Corrin, who hails from the Dawson Building Midway Surf Life Saving Club, claimed a second placing, her maiden podium in the series.

The 22-year-old sits fourth-equal overall, on 28 points, out of the 20 female athletes in the series.

She lives and trains in Queensland, where she competes for Northcliffe on the Gold Coast.

After the first race at Manly last month, when she'd made the podium, Corrin said she thought it was the best she had felt in a series race.

“I'm over the moon . . . what a result to start the summer with,” she said at the time.

She finished 12th in the second round at Manly.

Corrin's father Dave told The Herald yesterday his daughter felt she was training well and felt good about herself as she prepared for this weekend's rounds.

She and Taylor were both home for Christmas and New Year in Gisborne.

Taylor, also from the Midway club originally and who also competes for Northcliffe, finished sixth and seventh in the two rounds in the men's competition at Manly.

He sits fifth-equal, on 29 points, in the 20-strong men's series.

“Cory said when he was home that he was feeling pretty happy with where he's at in the competition,” his father Dave Taylor told The Herald yesterday.

“He told us the competition was getting a lot closer each year.

“It's getting tougher and there's not a lot of points separating them.

“They've had a lot of big surf over there lately and that can be a significant factor.”
