HAT-TRICK HERO: YMP left wing Jayden Milner scores his third and his team’s fourth try in a 50-16 demolition of OBM in a premier rugby match at Rugby Park on Saturday. The victory secured YMP second place in the competition and earned them a semifinal match against Ngatapa or OBM, depending on results in the final round-robin game. Ngatapa are third, on 35 points. Their last round-robin game is against bottom-of-the-table Tapuae. OBM, who are fourth on 32 points, take on competition leaders Waikohu. Picture by Paul Rickard

High School Old Boys ended Waikohu’s 10-match unbeaten run in Poverty Bay rugby’s premier division with a 39-30 win at Te Karaka on Saturday.

But GT Shearing Waikohu coach Jason Tuapawa was surprisingly upbeat following the loss.

“We don’t like to lose any game but the boys were talking about getting the monkey (being unbeaten) off our backs before the top-four playoffs,” said Tuapawa, whose side have sealed top spot ahead of Saturday’s match against OBM, currently in fourth place, in what could be a semifinal dress rehearsal at Te Karaka.

“You have to hand it to Jamie Hutana (HSOB coach) and his players; they’re not in the playoffs but they wanted to win this one and, to be fair, they deserved to win.

“They started well and got the jump on us before we fought back, and that fightback was something I was pleased with. The boys didn’t drop their heads or look for excuses.

“We came through the game with no injuries, which is a bonus.”

Tuapawa made changes to his regular starting line-up to rest some players who had played a lot of rugby and give time on the paddock to some who needed game time.

“But that’s not an excuse,” he said.

“I put out a team I believed could win this game and I don’t want to take anything away from HSOB.

“Their loosies (Stefan Destounis, No.8 Tamanui Hill and Viliami Kavai) killed us at the breakdown.”

Earthwork Solutions HSOB coach Hutana said he was proud of the way the players stood up after the disappointment of not making the playoffs and not being able to defend the Lee Bros Shield they had won for the past three seasons.

“The boys showed the pride they had in the jersey,” he said.

“It was a tight game after we started strongly. Both teams scored some good tries and we were glad to come away with the win.”

HSOB also collected the Challenge Trophy, which will go on the line on Saturday when they play Athletic in Wairoa.

Winger Andrew Tauatevalu collected three points in the most-valuable-player ratings, while skipper and front-rower Jody Tuhaka picked up two and fullback Korey Love, one.

Waikohu’s best on the day were lock Tulsa Kaui (three), winger KC Wilson (two) and No.8 James Rutene (one).
