Surf lifesaver Cory Taylor is just hours away from his first competition as captain of the Black Fins. Gold Coast-based Taylor, from Gisborne, will lead the New Zealand team in the International Surf Rescue Challenge in Durban, South Africa.
The series gets under way at 7pm today, NZ time.
“It’sa huge honour to captain the team,” Taylor, from the Midway club, said. “I’m very conscious that there have been a lot of great athletes that have gone before me but I’m also just another member of the Black Fins team.”
The open team are coached by Matt Cairns, with lifesaving legend Cory Hutchings his assistant. Both are from Gisborne.
Midway’s Olivia Corrin is part of the 12-strong line-up of athletes.
The carnival involves South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Spain and the United States.
Waikanae surf lifesavers Briana Irving, Christy Tate, Georgie Pitkethley, Lachie Falloon and Seven Mapu are in the under-19 Junior Black Fins also competing in Durban.
