Gisborne Speedway will explode into action tonight and tomorrow night with the Jazzed Up Logging North Island Stockcar Championship, and the racing looks set to be red-hot.

A field of 68 cars will contest three qualifying groups tonight ahead of a big finals series tomorrow night.

The line-up includes 1NZ Kyle Rowe from Palmerston North, 2NZ Logan Peat from Auckland, 3NZ Cody Lockett from Whanganui and last season’s North Island champ Josh Walsh (35S).

Gisborne’s Bryce Simpson (98G), Sam Hughes (77G), Jason Lovell (67G), Trevor McArthur (128G), Nigel Hazelton (54G) and Willie Kaa (164G) form the backbone of a strong local challenge.

Also flying the Gisborne colours will be Shane Bunning (7G), Jordan Fleetwood (16G), Logan Bruce (17G), Josh Mulcahy (48G), David Bacon (52G), Ethan Bruce (71G) and Adrian Bruce (717G).

“I think the Gisborne cars have a relatively high chance of making the podium, but then again you’ve got to have some luck,” club president Sam Hughes said. “We’ll certainly have two awesome nights of racing.”

The Gisborne track last hosted the North Island championship in the 2011-2012 season.

“The 80-car field will be whittled down to the top 30 cars for the final,” Hughes said. “A second-tier series with another 30 cars will also be run on Saturday night.”

Tonight’s support programme features production saloons, superstocks, streetstocks and “Golden Oldies” stockcars.

Tomorrow night’s support classes feature superstocks over a four-race series for the McCafferty Metal Cartage Best Pair, and Round 2 of the MTF Finance Gisborne Superstock Points Dash, along with youth ministocks, saloons and Golden Oldies.

“It will be two massive nights of entertainment,” Hughes said.

Nearly two dozen races will be run each night.

Cars will be scrutineered at the track from 2pm today and the public are welcome to watch.

Stockcars will parade around the track from 5.30pm ahead of a start to racing at 6pm.

Tomorrow’s start time will be 4.30pm to allow for the repechage process and another parade for the final 30 cars.

Gates open at 3.30pm tomorrow.

“This is our biggest meeting for the season,” Hughes said. “We cannot wait for the action to start.”
