SILVER LINING: Trampolinist Leah Scholefield won a silver medal as part of New Zealand’s transtasman team in the double mini-tramp at the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne.

THE weather was cold but the competition was hot at the Australian Gymnastics Championships for Gisborne trampolinist Leah Scholefield.

Sixteen-year-old Scholefield was part of New Zealand’s transtasman team that came second in the double mini-trampoline discipline, behind New South Wales.

“As a team, we were facing Australia’s best, from all their states,” she said.

Scholefield said some of the Australian competitors at the event in Melbourne were at Olympic level.

The weather was chilly and the New Zealanders didn’t quite perform as well as they might have hoped.

Scholefield had a mishap in one of her individual runs, so finished outside the top eight.

Motivated to do better in the teams event, she produced one of the top three scores for New Zealand.

She was 0.1 of a mark off qualifying for the world cup in Spain in October.
