GISBORNE surfer Kelly Ryan performs the classic hang five manoeuvre in his men’s longboard heat at the national surfing championships at Makorori Beach yesterday.
Ryan was part of a powerful Gisborne challenge, with six of the eight semifinal spots up for grabs claimed by locals. Ryan, who won the title
in 2003, was among those. He won his heat with 12.9 out of 20 for his two best waves. The Gisborne effort was topped by Guy Edge Burns, who advanced to the semis with a score of 15.
In the shortboard age group divisions, Finn Vette made the under-14 boys’ final and he and Finn Johnson are in the u16 semis, Stella Smith is into the u16 girls’ semis and she and Saffi Vette are in the u18 girls’ semis.
Daizee Rawls will contest the u14 girls’ final. Chris Malone has made three men’s age group finals — the over-30s, o35s and o40s, the latter of those also featuring Maz Quinn.
The champs continued today.
