THE contest between the GMC Green and Paikea was the highlight of the senior hockey round on the LJ Hooker turf at the weekend and Paikea produced one of their best efforts of the season.

The GMC “Green Machine” won 4-3 but it could have gone the other way.

“It was a good fightback from Paikea after they trailed 2-0 at halftime,” commentator Tony Scragg said.

“GMC stayed in front but Paikea stayed with them to the end and the whole Paikea team delivered one of their best performances of the season.”

Scragg said the Green Machine would have come out of it knowing they needed to fine-tune their attack.

The 1-1 draw between YMP B and Emerre and Hathaway GMC Gold was another highlight.

“YMP scored their goal in the first half and GMC equalised in the second,” Scragg said.

“The two sides could not be split and it continued the close-fought matches between those teams.”

The best of the men’s games was between YMP A and LOB A.

“LOB A were in the match against unbeaten YMP A: they scored first and it was only 2-1 to YMP at halftime,” Scragg said.

“In the second half, Michael Bond scored two goals that were stunning and that set LOB back on their heels. But overall it was a better performance from LOB A and they will take some heart from it.”

Catch-up games were played last night.

“Gisborne Girls’ High School played YMP B and were leading 1-0 going into the closing stages,” Scragg said.

“But YMP scored a late equaliser to make it 1-1.”

In another catch-up game, GMC Gold beat Te Aowera 4-1.

Women — Division 1: YMP A 9 (Moelani Tureia-Siataga 5, Leigh Akuhata-Brown 3, Skylah Pohatu) GMC Kowhai 3 (Megan Allen 3).
