BASKETBALL by Ben O’Brien-Leaf

The novelty factor has gone . . . it’s time for the Draft League to showcase rugged competitiveness

Gisborne Basketball is not just basketball played in Gisborne.

It is a particular blend of unapologetically physical play and feistiness, which was once a characteristic of the game in New Zealand.

Only at the YMCA do the good times still roll.

And they roll again tonight from 5.30pm, when Team Reg takes on Team Keenan, followed by Team Tom going at it with Team Sparks.

Team Reg beat Team Tom 74-68 in the season-opener last week while Team Keenan got the better of Team Sparks 72.

All four teams made spectacular individual plays but special mention should be made of Tyrese Tuwairua-Brown (31 points) and Holden Wilson (30).

Tuwairua-Brown, of Team Tom, and Wilson, of Team Reg, were consistently superb.

There is also every chance that these two premier grade club champion guards will fire again this evening.

Team Keenan big man William Collier is capable of putting up another 26-point game but Team Sparks, on opening night, was the crew who displayed the biggest arsenal of scoring weaponry — four scorers in double-figures.

Caleb Poole plays in the low-post, his fellow forward Ryan Walters can step outside the three-point line to score while bothNgaru Grayson and Ethan Ngarangione-Pearson are capable jumpshooters.

Tonight looks like being eventful.

Reggie Namana of Team Reg said: “We have a focus — to implement our defensive systems. We’re not fussed about offence as we have enough firepower.”

Team Tom head coach Thomas Tindale felt his crowd let their game slip away with costly turnovers.

Team Keenan head coach Keenan Ruru-Poharama watches the game like a hawk and has a basketball IQ to match:

“If we look back to last week, Holden and Kahn Grayson scored the majority of Team Reg’s points,” he said.

“Most of them came off screens so we’ll have to defend off those tonight, be prepared to help on drives and close out on three-point shooters.”

There is no doubt that the basketball minds of young players and veterans across all four Draft League teams are now at full stretch.
