“The course was absolutely brilliant.”
Reedy, Simon Jeune, Pete Stewart, Jace Brown and Sel Peneha flew the PBEC flag against a powerful BoP line-up that included former New Zealand international and former professional Mark Smith.
Bay of Plenty, who are vying for a third consecutive Freyberg Masters crown at Paraparaumu Beach next month, won all three matchplay fixtures over Saturday and Sunday morning.
Reedy signalled he is tracking nicely for the national tournament. He lost to Mark Hughes 3 and 2 but halved the next against Simon Wright and beat Steve Heberley on the 18th in the third.
The others lost all their matches, although several were close.
Reedy improved as the weekend progressed. After losing on the 16th and 17th on Saturday, he clawed his way back from 5-down to lose his last match 1-down against Campbell Irvine.
Brown was competitive in his 2 and 1, 3 and 2, and 4 and 3 losses.
Jeune, who was unable to play in the first round, lost 4 and 3 and 6 and 5.
Stewart said of his three heavy defeats that “they were far too good and too young for this old fella”.
It was an enjoyable and eye-opening experience for Peneha, who suffered a couple of big losses.
“These guys are good,” he said.
The players were highly complimentary of Ohope International and its hospitality, Jeune describing the beachside course as “a real gem”.
Reedy, with help from Jeune, is looking at finalising the PBEC squad for the Freyberg Masters “maybe” in the next week.
Reedy said at this stage the November-8-to-12 tournament was all go, although the participation of Auckland and North Harbour was doubtful due to Covid, and Waikato were 50-50.
The current draw pits PBEC against Otago, Bay of Plenty, Northland, Southland, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland and Taranaki.
PBEC were 15th out of the 15 provinces last year. They had half a team point and seven individual wins.
