Butch McKenzie had a great day. He won the 17+ men’s gross with 82, got the approach for his division and capped it with a two on the 15th.
Dave Maloy topped the net with 66 and Gary “Bubba” Watson signalled what was to come on the men’s PGA tour by winning the stableford with 39 points. Watson’s American namesake won the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club the next day — his first PGA title for two years — and pocketed $NZ1.78 million.
Patutahi’s Bubba took home a prize and a full stomach from the usual topnotch 19th-hole hospitality turned on by the country club.
Helen Humble and Jo Blair Beattie won the Canadian mixed pairs stableford with 42 points, one clear of Helen Pomana/Chris Beattie and Val Grace/Larry Green combos.

TUKI Sweeney has been called plenty of things in his time as a rugby referee.For half of Sunday’s round, his playing group had another name for him . . . “Par-man”.
Sweeney parred all holes on the front nine then birdied the 10th to be 1-under.
The wheels started to wobble, including a triple-bogey-7 on the 14th, but he rallied with three pars in the last four holes for 78-12-66 and a division 1 men’s stableford-winning points haul of 43.
Richard Foon impressed off the blue tees on Saturday, winning the division 1 men’s competition with 79-13-66, for 42 points.
June MacKinnon made a rare foray into the 80s, winning the women’s par on Tuesday with 88-20-68, for +8.
