Patutahi

THE Lee Westwood of Poverty Bay-East Coast golf showed the potential is still there in Patutahi’s open opening day tournament at the weekend.

Englishman Westwood, one of the top golfers of his generation, has never won a major and is running out of time to do so.

A fine striker of the ball, Devery is yet to taste similar glory at district level.

contact The Gisborne Herald at 869-0633 or email sports@gisborneherald.co.nzOn Sunday he showed he has the capability — if he could put it all together on a more consistent basis — in winning the 0-16 men’s gross.

Devery, off a 7-handicap. had four birdies and three bogeys in hia 1-under 69 — a round that surprisingly featured no birdies on the four short par-5s, which are usually eaten up by the big hitters.

Waikohu-Patutahi member DJ Baty won the net with 75-14-61 while Brian Wallace led a five-strong group of 40-point scorers in the stableford.

Watson’s American namesake won the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club the next day — his first PGA title for two years — and pocketed $NZ1.78 million.

Patutahi’s Bubba took home a prize and a full stomach from the usual topnotch 19th-hole hospitality turned on by the country club.
