His handicap was too high to make the championship 16 so Dion Milner claimed the second 16 honours instead at the Ray Scragg Motors King of the Coast men's open over the weekend.

Milner, a multiple winner of the first 16 championship, beat Mahia's Wade Wesche 3 and 2 in the matchplay final of the Cook Handicap second 16.

Scott Cranswick made it a title double for the host course in beating Toby Williams (Poverty Bay) 4 and 3 in the Uawa Handicap third 16 final.

The visitors got their hands on one of the section crowns, with Kawerau's Ricky Bowen thumping Tahunga's Ben Johnson 6 and 5 in the Hauiti Handicap fourth 16 decider.

Poverty Bay's William Brown won the championship 16 final, beating Andrew Higham 1-up. More on Brown's win on today's back page.

It was another successful edition of the popular two-day tournament despite the interruption of Covid-19 on the district golfing calendar.

There was high praise for the course after the Uawa area was hit by heavy rain, which caused severe damage to Coast roads and land the previous weekend.
