Gisborne ParkButch Atkins has told and been part of a story or three in his long golfing career but he only needed two words to sum up Daniel Collier following the men’s club championship finals on Sunday.
“Too good,” the 59-year-old said of a player over 30 years his junior.
Top qualifier Collier completed a dominant club championship senior division campaign with a 4 and 3 win over Atkins in the 36-hole matchplay final.
It was his fourth senior title and finished off a performance which started in sensational style when he top qualified with a course record-equalling 7-under 65.
Atkins, searching for his second senior title — 24 years after winning his first — kept pace with Collier in the opening 18.
The pair shot matching 76s to be all-square but Collier put the foot down in the afternoon, and Atkins acknowledged he couldn’t keep up.
“I ran out of steam.”
Tom Reynolds held off a hard-charging Bo Huhu to win the intermediate 36-hole final 2 and 1.
The pair were even at the halfway stage but Reynolds powered to a 6-up lead with eight holes to play in the afternoon before getting the wobbles.
Huhu peeled off win after win before Reynolds sank a 10-footer on the 35th to avoid the immense pressure of having to go down the 36th.
Barry Cox came from 4-down after nine holes to beat Wayne McHugh in a sudden-death playoff in the 18-hole junior final.
Cox wiped the halfway deficit on the 16th, then won 17 to go 1-up.
McHugh won the 18th to force extra holes and a bogey-6 on the 19th was good enough for Cox to make it a second junior crown to go along with his two intermediate titles.
Norm Marsters beat Tam Buckingham in the endeavour final.
It has been recently reported in Golf Roundup that Atkins was beaten by Pete Cameron in last year’s final. Cameron actually defeated Atkins in the semi and went on to defeat Jack Glassford in the final.
while blows were being traded all over the course by the club championship contenders, the shot of the day came from Dave Harrison — an ace on the 155-metre second hole.
It helped him to 80-15-65 and victory in the men’s stableford with 44 points.

Poverty BayALEX Kirkpatrick enjoyed a well-deserved 19th-hole beer after a marathon matchplay performance at the Poverty Bay open.
Kirkpatrick won the second 16, playing 78 matchplay holes along the way. Add to that the 36 holes of qualifying and it was no wonder he was a tired boy.
He won his first match on the 19th, the next on the 19th, the semi against Neil Mackie on the 22nd and the final against Thomas Donovan on the 18th.
Ted Jefferd’s fifth 16 triumph prevented a home-course clean sweep of the divisions. The Tahunga 22-handicapper was the only non- Poverty Bay member to win a division.
He beat Colin Christie (Poverty Bay) 3 and 2 in the final.

Pat Butler proved too consistent for Auckland University student Jeremy Tucker in the third 16 final. The pair shook hands on the 17th.
Tim Sherratt, a joint member of Poverty Bay and Tahunga, defeated Royal Auckland member Michael Collins in the fourth 16 final.
Roy Skuse sneaked home 1-up over fellow Poverty Bay member Chris Warwick to win the sixth 16.

VeteransBUTCH Atkins made up for the disappointment of losing his senior club championship final (see Gisborne Park section of Golf Roundup) by winning the Gisborne East Coast Senior Golfers’ Society’s Croskery Tankard on Tuesday.
Atkins and Brian Morrissey totalled 87 points for the two rounds of four-ball best-ball stableford — the deciding round being held at Park.
They finished two points ahead of John Fricker and Tam Buckingham.
