CLUB CHAMPIONS: Poverty Bay Golf Club's women's club champions were decided yesterday. They are (from left) Pip Dymock (intermediate), Anne Witters (senior) and Vicki Fraser (junior). Picture supplied

Two first-time winners and a return to the top marked the Poverty Bay women's club championship finals day yesterday.

Anne Witters won her ninth senior women's crown 24 years after winning her first and 11 years since her eighth title.

her 7 and 6 win over Jan Utting in the 36-hole matchplay final yesterday means she has won the senior title in four consecutive decades — the first of those in 1998.

The others were in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011.

On a glorious day, Witters forged a 3-up lead after 18 holes and added to it in the third nine before sealing victory on the 30th (12th).

Pip Dymock (intermediate) and Vicki Fraser (junior) celebrated their first club championship successes.

Dymock was 2-up after 18 holes against Miggles Shanks, was still 2-up after 27 and went on to win on the 35th.

Dymock described the victory as “a big surprise” and “a big thrill”.

She admitted to feeling a bit like a professional, with her own caddie and a bit of a gallery, which she said was a little scary and exciting at the same time.

Fraser powered to a 6-up lead in her 27-hole duel with Sue Kemp.

Kemp made a comeback in the third nine but the damage had been done and Fraser won on the 24th.

There was a touch of irony to victory . . . the trophy she won is the Kemp Cup.

Fraser recalled getting to the final of the intermediate champs in the past. She was delighted to go that one step further.

“It was a long time coming.”

Sue Ellwood beat Chic Mackie in the 9-holers' final.

■ TWENty-four years ago Dean Twigley claimed his first and only senior men's club championship title.

It was 1998 and “Twigs” was one of the young guns of Poverty Bay-East Coast golf.

Plenty of water has flowed under the bridge since then but Twigley is still a quality player and last Saturday he beat another one-time senior champion to move a step closer to the 2022 final.

Twigley defeated 2015 champion Simon Jeune 1-up in their quarterfinal to set up a semifinal with first-season member Nick Whyte.

Three of the four quarterfinals went to 18 and beyond.

Whyte, after leading 2-up early then trailing 2-down with three holes to play against Stefan Andreassen, won the 16th and 17th and went on to clinch the match with a par on the 20th.

Mark Jefferson threw birdies at Thomas Donovan on the second, third and fourth holes for a 3-up lead but by the turn it was all-square.

Donovan won the 12th and 13th to be 2-up only for Jefferson to win 15 and 17.

They halved the 18th to send it to sudden-death and a Jefferson par on the 19th ended it.

His next challenge is a skyscraper-tall order.

Top seed and defending champion William Brown brushed aside Pete Anderson 5 and 4 in a six-birdie, 5-under the card performance.

It came after a 5-under 67 featuring eight birdies, which won him the division 1 men's stableford with 40 points on Thursday.

Zach Rolls kept alive his hopes of intermediate titles at different courses in the same year.

Rolls beat Neil Mackie in the quarterfinals and will play Peter Hakiwai in the semis.

Teenager Rolls is also in the intermediate semis at Electrinet Park — that clash to be played today.

Four-time intermediate runner-up Cliff Poole plays James Situ in the other Poverty Bay semi.

Reedy was impressed with Collier.

“He played solid . . . he's hitting a long ball.”

Extra holes were needed to decide both senior men's finalists in club championship semifinals day on Sunday.

Hukanui Brown has the chance to make it four senior crowns on the trot after a comeback win over Jace Brown knocked out No.1 seed Regan Hindmarsh in a Friday quarterfinal.

Jace was 3-up after nine holes against Huks but the big man fought back and won with a birdie on the 19th.

His final opponent is Reef Pohatu who duked it out for 22 holes against Eddie Brown Jnr.

Eddie missed the green on the par-4 22nd (fourth hole) and was unable to up and down, leaving Pohatu to sink a 4-footer for the win.

“The putter went cold,” Eddie said. “And Reef just stayed solid on the back.”

Tom Hindmarsh, Reuben Mottart and Dave Quinn underlined their top seeding status to progress to finals in the other divisions.

Forrester warmed up for that by winning the men's stableford on Sunday with 39 points — 10 points more than Higham.

But as golfers well know, seven days is a long time in golf.

Iritana Ngarimu broke 90 for the first time in nearly a year-and-a-half in winning the women's bisque bogey.

Ngarimu had nines of 47, 41 in her 88-27-61, which put her 10-up.
