Tolaga BayPETE Kerekere took the throne while several other players earned royal honours at the King of the Coast men’s open tournament over the weekend.

Kerekere raised the Poverty Bay club flag over the nine-hole course after defeating Patutahi’s Tony Akroyd 1-up in the championship 16 matchplay final.

Below him, several players claimed “princely” status.

Scott Cranswick beat Bruce Yates in an all-Tolaga Bay Cook Handicap second 16 final.

Greg Hawea (Poverty Bay) outgunned Spencer Butt (Tahunga) in the Uawa Handicap third 16 decider.

Ben Johnson denied the host club a double in defeating Kara Solomon in the Hauiti Handicap fourth 16 final.

Gisborne Park“MY greatest individual sporting achievement,” is how Brad Reynolds described his giant-killing act in men’s club championship matches over the weekend.

Reynolds stunned defending and four-time senior champion Daniel Coller 5 and 4 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Only a week before, Reynolds had struggled to 87 in qualifying while Collier posted 76.

But matchplay is a fickle beat. Reynolds got his nose in front quickly, birdied the ninth to be 3-up at the turn and never looked back, winning the 10th and 12th holes, then closing it out on the 14th.

It set up a semi clash with 60-year-old Butch Atkins, who needed overtime before beating Rob Taylor on the 19th.

Top qualifier Sel Peneha stayed in the hunt with a 17th-hole win over Chum Aramakutu.

He faces 2012 champion Jayden Bright, who easily accounted for 2014 winner Peter Cameron 5 and 4.

Tom Reynolds remains on course to retain the intermeiate crown but faces a tall semifinal order in the shape of in-form Kani Kingi.

Mark Kennedy and Danny Boyle meet in the other semi.

The Boyle family could be celebrating a double by Sunday afternoon.Danny’s son Zane progressed to the last four of the junior division.

He arrived for his Sunday match with Wayne McHugh still in party mode after helping HSOB to victory in the premier club rugby final at neighbouring Rugby Park on Saturday.

That success continued and Boyle junior is now lining up top qualifier Bruce Symes in the semis. Defending champion Barry Cox and greenkeeper Pete Tamatea will decide the other finalist.

Mihi Marino has the chance of back-to-back women’s club championship title in different divisions.

The 2015 junior winner, Marino eliminated defending intermediate champion Noeleen Grace at the weekend to move into the final. Her opponent will be either Tracey Ford or Carney Pipi.

Francie Hutton has filled one of the junior final berths after a 1-up win against Margaret Alley. Freida Brown and Ann Richardson meet in the other semifinal this Saturday.

The senior women’s division is down to the last four, minus defending champion Blanche Walker, who was knocked out by Wiki Morrissey.

It gets a lot tougher for Morrissey this weekend. She meets 17-time senior champ Karen Hay in the semis. Jo Kerr and Karen McDonald contest the other semi.

All finals are on Sunday.

Poverty BayJAN Utting’s quest to add the AB&J Cup to her success list ended yesterday.

Utting’s gross total of 125 earned her the coveted AB&J Cup senior gross title in the 27-hole tournament — a trophy she has been chasing since it was introduced in 1999.

Marg Colebourne (112) won the silver net, June MacKinnon (138) the Meg Harper Salver for bronze gross, Mary Allan (104) the bronze net, Ann Ward (59 points) the overall stableford and Judy Roe-Mason (21pts) the 9-holers’ stableford.

MacKinnon was as elated as Utting. She had never won a gross title at a bronze tournament.

If they were handing out a “Mr Consistency” title at Poverty Baty, Alex Kirkpatrick would be among the contenders.

A single-figure handicapper for many years, Kirkpatrick is among the most solid players in the district, and turned that reputation up a notch last Thursday.

Kirkpatrick posted his best round since October of 2014 (a 73) in winning the division 1 men’s stableford with 2-over 74-8-66, for 42 points.

He had seven pars on each of the nines and a sole birdie on the 16th.

Weekend men’s competition winners were Neil Mackie (38pts), John Leahy (40), Mike Callaghan (39) and Ron Young (40).

MahiaA COUPLE of big numbers could not stop Jackie Thompson from winning the womens net-minus-stableford on Sunday.

Thompson shot 110 off the stick and her 78-34-44 easily topped the field.

Gid Pitman slipped under 80 for the first time in six rounds — 79-6-73 — to win the men’s stableford with 35 points.

SeniorsEntries have already been received for Gisborne East Coast Senior Golfers’ Society’s major tournament of the year.

The Sean Shivnan Pharmacy senior men’s and women’s open is being held at Poverty Bay from Sunday, November 6, to Wednesday, November 9.

The Sunday play will feature men’s 18-hole strokeplay for the Endeavour Cup (for players aged 55 to 69 years) and Discovery Cup (70yrs and over).

Matchplay in groups of eight will follow and entry is first-in, first-served. The men’s competition is limited to the first 96 entries.
