HE burned up the Gisborne Park course at the East Coast Fire Brigades tournament the previous weekend.
Last weekend, Wade Wesche converted that winning form to the Waikohu open opening day tournament.
The young Mahia member delivered a more modest performance — compared with his hot round at the Park — of 38 points to win the men’s stableford on countback from Waikohu-Patutahi teenager DJ Baty.
Wesche shot 78-8-70, his round featuring two twos and two triple-bogey-8s.
He also had the best second shot for his section and won the approach.
Local duo Percy Milner and Audrey Tamanui-Nunn won the Canadian foursomes stableford with an impressive 50-point haul, five ahead of Patutahi pair Jon Maynard and Jandy Solomon.
Te Puia Springs’ Dick Cook bounced back from a dog attack that left him with a leg injury. He and wife Aomihi were third on 42 points.

Poverty Bay
DOWN in the golfing dumps one day, floating with the clouds the next . . . Mark Norman underlined the fickle nature of the sport over the weekend.
“Normo” signed for 90-12-78 on Saturday, shooting a matching pair of 45s.
The next day he cleaned up the division 1 men’s stableford, firing a 1-over 37 on the back nine holes in his 78-12-66, for 42 points.
Phil Grogan won division 2 with 82-15-67, for 42 points, while Simon Jeune had two birdies, two bogeys and the rest pars in his excellent 72-4-69, for 40 points, although only good enough for second behind Norman.
Jim McGregor needed only 35 points to win the Saturday div 2 men’s stableford on February 3. A week later he upped the quality level to 41 points — 82-15-67— to make it two victories in a row.
Stefan Andreassen won div 1 with 74-4-70, for 38 points, thanks to a sizzling front nine of 2-under 34, including a two.
Harvey Johanson’s lowest score in over 13 months earned him the Thursday division 2 men’s stableford honours last week. Johanson shot 83-16-67, for 41 points.
Viv Bell had two twos on her way to winning the women’s stableford on Tuesday with 41 points.

CHRIS Parker posted his best 18-hole score since September 2015 to win the senior men’s net on Sunday.
Parker had 76-13-63 while Gary “Bubba” Watson’s 85-21-64 won the junior division and Shelley Robertson’s 86-17-69 topped the women’s division.

STEVE Phillips headed off Pete Cameron to win the men’s stableford on Sunday.
Phillips’ 77-10-67, for 41 points, got the nod on countback from Cameron while Carney Pipi’s 36 points won the women’s division.
Wiki Morrissey’s second consecutive 84 topped the women’s stableford last Wednesday.

Te Puia Springs
PETE Ngarimu and Georgina Roberts collected the silverware as the late, great Peter Rouse was fondly remembered on Sunday.
Ngarimu won the men’s division of the Peter Rouse Memorial open tournament. His 80-16-64 won him the PD Rouse tankard, which is the tankard Rouse was presented for winning the 1999 King of the Coast.
Ngarimu was one stroke ahead of 2017 winner Jim Devery, with Bill Clark third on countback from Roly Smith.
Roberts was a runaway winner of the PD Rouse silver tray. Her 84-19-66 was six shots clear of 2015 winner Iritana Ngarimu.
A small field, including a contingent from Waikohu, paid tribute to the great man who died in January 2012.
A note in the results emailed to The Herald summed up the respect in which the East Coast’s finest golfer was held: “He was and always will be the legend of Te Puia Springs Golf Club.”

Seniors
“YOU don’t need the practice,” Frank Ball was told by a fellow Poverty Bay club member when spotted playing a few holes on Sunday afternoon.
Either he didn’t or it proved a valuable warm-up for the Gisborne East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society’s trip to Mahia on Tuesday.
Left-hander Ball, who plays off a a 10-handicap at his home course, posted the round of the day on the tricky nine-hole track to win the stableford with 43 points.
He was one point ahead of local Anthony Steel, with Poverty Bay’s Arthur Bacon third on 40 points.
Fifty seniors turned up for the GEC vets’ first outing of the year, and most of the region’s clubs were represented.
With the mercury hitting 30 degrees, a few decided to head to the 19th early while at least one golf cart succumbed to the weather.
The society’s annual meeting followed play and the vets were then treated to a slap-up meal and entertainment before the bus headed back to Gisborne.
Mahia’s typically superb hospitality and the quality of its beachside course was much appreciated.

Fundraiser
WHAKAKI Marae’s annual fundraising golf tournament is on Saturday.
The open tournament is at Mahia Golf Club. There are gross, net and stableford sections for men and women, plus a non-golfers division.
Tee times are from 7.45am and 11.45am.
