Gisborne swimmer Tyler Finau has been one of the stars so far at the New Zealand National Age Group Championships in Auckland.

The Enterprise Cars Swim Team member yesterday racked up her third and fourth titles in the girls’ 12-13 years age group on day 2 of the champs at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre.

Finau, 13, won the 100 metres backstroke final in 1 minute 6.39 seconds and the 800m freestyle in 9.30.33 — nearly 15secs clear of the field.

It followed on from her day 1 success when she won the 100m free in 59.56, the first time she had broken the one-minute mark, and the 200m butterfly in 2.25.12.

Another Gisborne swimmer, Imogen Amor-Bendall of Comet Swimming Club was third in the 200m fly final won by Finau.

Gisborne’s Michael Pickett, now schooling in Australia and competing for the North Shore club, dominated the 15yrs boys’ 50m free final last night in 23.15, only 0.01 outside his New Zealand age group record.

Jack Keepa (Ent) followed up his fourth-equal placing in the 14yrs boys’ 50m breaststroke on day 1 with seventh in the 100m backstroke yesterday.

Denby Gallagher (Ent) was 10th in the 16-18yrs girls’ 50m free on day 2.
