Gisborne women dominant in interclub

IN the interclub bowls competitions completed at the weekend, Gisborne women won Division 1 and Kahutia, Division 2. Te Karaka won divisions 1 and 2 in the men’s comp.

Te Karaka’s Division 1 men’s team won four of their six games. David File won his two singles matches, and the four also won two.

The winning Te Karaka side comprised — Singles: David File. Pairs: Adam McIlrory and Arthur Baty. Fours: John Dawson (skip) Lofty Hurrell, Bob McIlroy and Duncan Macpherson.

Gisborne’s Division 1 women’s four won two games. Their singles player and pairs combination won a game each.

The winning Gisborne team comprised — Singles: Ronnie Crone. Pairs: Queenie Takurua and Adrienne Smiler. Fours: Carol Hawes, Lorna Reeve, Bobbie Beattie and Lesley McIntosh.

These two teams will represent Gisborne-East Coast Bowls at the national finals early in 2016. Te Karaka were well-performed in the Division 2 men’s competition.

Te Karaka’s team comprised — Singles: Ben Browne. Pairs: Russell McDonald and Lester Wright. Fours: Reuben Browne, Andy Tamanui, Mike Howse and Mike Murray.

The Kahutia Division 2 women’s team were too strong for their opposites and ran away with the event after two rounds.

They were — Singles: Millie Allen. Pairs: Anita Vaoutua and Lucy Shanks. Fours: Maria Bradley, Lesley Seymour, Joyce Wagner and Pat Bayley.

On Sunday, the men’s centre pairs were completed, Steve Goldsbury and Mark Walker beating Adam McIlroy and Lofty Hurrell 14-13.

This was a close-run affair. Goldsbury took a 7-0 lead after five ends but the game closed up after 10 ends to 9-8.

After 14 ends it was 12-10 and after 17, it was 13-all. Well done, Steve and Mark.

The women’s pairs had been completed three weeks before. Marie Wright and Ruby Tiepa defeated Milly Allen and Emily Hongara 19-10.

This success gave Marie her gold star. Well done, Marie. The beaten semifinalists were Crone and Beattie, and Sarah Browne and Del Tamanui.
