They had to designate their qualifying round beforehand, then play best-ball stableford.
The top qualifiers were Mike Christophers and Adrian Wyrill on 48 points.
The top six advanced to the round of 16 while the other 20 are doing battle in a “play-in round” to decide the other 10 to complete the 16.
Among those are defending champions Anaru Reedy (off a +5 handicap) and greenkeeper Pete Tamatea (20) — the latter’s qualifying round on Sunday his first official
18 holes since September of last year.
Those in the play-in round have to Monday of Queen’s Birthday Weekend to compete their matches.
The losers from this round will drop into the Turanganui Cup section.
The round of 16 matches must be played between June 8 and June 20. The losing pairs drop into the Fletcher Cup subsidiary.

A SIXTH Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs title and a second in a row is in the sights of Gay Young.
The defending champion, who won the crown with Vicki Fraser in 2020, has advanced to the 2021 final alongside partner Pen Wanklyn.
The pair defeated Jan Steele and Kirsty Shaw 3 and 2 in their semifinal.
Their final opponents were to be decided today in the semi between Lynne Holmberg and Vonnie Fletcher and Sally Spence and Ann Ward.
The Juliet Rickard trophy 9-holers’ matchplay finalists have emerged. Sue Ellwood will play Jean Clayton.
“Beautiful to watch” was how William Brown’s latest golfing feat was described.
The Poverty Bay greenkeeper shot 6-under 66 on Sunday — the lowest men’s round of the year on the Awapuni Links.
Brown equalled his best score off the white tees although he has gone lower off the championship blues — 65 on April 7, 2018.
The latest performance featured seven birdies — five of those in a sublime back nine of 5-under 31.
He bombed one long putt for birdie on the 17th but the rest were putts inside 10-feet.
His sole bogey, on the 339-metre third hole, was a three-putt after crushing his drive to 60m from the green.
“I was hungry for the ‘bird’,” he said.
Thomas Donovan, who was playing with Brown, said Brown “did it with ease . . . it was beautiful to watch”.

Regan Hindmarsh knows that only too well after an excellent round with one notable blemish in winning the senior men’s stableford on Sunday.
Hindmarsh carded even-par 70-2-68, for 39 points. His round featured five birdies, including a two, but he was left lamenting a triple-bogey 7 on the short fifth, which ultimately denied him a score in the 60s.
Junior men’s winner Mike de Luze was probably also wondering “what if” in his 82-13-69, for 39, dented by a quadruple-bogey 8 on the 18th.

TOUGH conditions were reflected in the scoring at the Waikohu Women’s Open on Saturday.
Players battled the elements but that didn’t dampen their enthusiam or enjoyment of typically generous Waikohu hospitality.
Handicap golf was non-existent although a few went close.
Te Puia Hot Springs’ and former Waikohu member Georgina Roberts won the 0-18 division stableford with 34 points; Wairoa’s Taina Paku won the 0-18 net with 91-17-74; and local Marg Tuapawa won the 19+ division net with 105-31-74.
