Poverty BayTHINGS could only get better for Brad Morgan after his first hole on Sunday.

They did . . . career-best round better.

Morgan overcame a disastrous triple bogey 8 on the first and a double bogey on the fourth to fire 3-over 75-9-66, for 42 points.

His first hole antics provided a 19th-hole story for his Sunday School cohorts — three tee boxes in the one hole. After hitting from the conventional tee box, his second shot saw his ball end up on the second hole tee box and his third landed on the third hole tee box.

Morgan was 5-over after six holes but played the next 12 holes 2-under, including a back nine of 1-under 35.

His efforts won him the division 1 stableford and the Sunday School loot for top stableford score.

Andrew Higham sent a subtle warning to his opponents at this weekend’s King of the Coast at Tolaga Bay. A regular among the KoTC frontrunners, Higham indicated he is in good touch with his first sub-par round at Poverty Bay for the year — 71-3-68 — on Saturday, which won him the division 1 men’s stableford (40 points).

A snowman (8) on the third hole didn’t stop Cyril Payn from winning division 2 with 82-14-68, for 41.

Neil Mackie won the latest round of the Thursday Throne. His 76-10-66 put him 6-up on the card and headed off Brent Colbert (+5), who also had to settle for runner-up honours on Sunday (41 points).

SUNDAY — Men’s stableford, division 1: B Morgan 42, B Colbert 41, P Stewart 39, P Anderson 39.
