STEVE “Shrek” Phillips earned himself a new nickname after winning the Thursday twilight 9-hole shootout final . . . “the Scrambler”.

Phillips escaped elimination several times throughout the final in which 10 players were whittled down to the last man standing hole by hole over nine holes.

The champion finished it fittingly, up-and-downing out of the bunker on the 18th for par and knocking out Shannon Toa.

Order of elimination for the Summit Forests/Tatapouri Restaurant and Diggit Gisborne-sponsored event held on the back nine was — Terry Pointon (10th hole/injured), Josh Taylor (11th), Tom Reynolds (12th), Shaun Pahina (13th), Dave Rameka (14th), Darrel Gregory (15th), Geoff Hill (16th), Ray Grace (17th) and Shannon Toa (18th).

Special mention was made of Brad Reynolds who initiated the competition and format.

THERE’S a good reason why Tene Goldsmith is known as the man with the “Goldie” touch.

Colin Simpson will vouch for that.

Goldsmith, aka “Goldie”, booked his place in the final of the Reynolds Cup men’s matchplay on Saturday.

The little leftie beat Simpson 2 and 1 in their semifinal to set up a trophy decider against Jimmy Situ.

Goldie, giving “Simmo” six shots, forged a 3-up lead in the first nine holes, then just as his opponent mounted a minor comeback, slammed the door shut with a 35-foot par putt on the 17th to seal the win.

“He then proceeded to hit into the toitoi on 18 (for a double-bogey-6),” Simpson said.

Situ lost his way into the final. Semifinal opponent Bruce Talbot won 2 and 1 but conceded the match as he is unavailable for the final.

SALLY Spence and Maxine Francois were clearcut overall winners at the Taste One/First Light Frozen women’s 27-hole Canadian foursomes open tournament yesterday.
