Gisborne ParkJO Kerrr has a fair few titles to go to match Karen Hay’s prolific senior women’s club championship record.

She got one closer to Hay’s 18 with a comprehensive win in the 36-hole final at the weekend.

Defending champion Kerr beat Hay 9 and 7, a string of wins in their third nine setting up her victory.

Kerr led 2-up at the halfway stage but surged to 6-up with a run of four wins from the fourth to seventh holes.

She teed off the 28th hole 7-up, won that then parred the 29th to complete a hat-trick of Park senior crowns.

Carney Pipi came back from 4-down during the front nine holes to beat Mihi Marino and secure her first intermediate title.

Pipi, the senior runner-up last year, chipped away at her deficit over the second-third of the 27-hole final.

She trailed 2-down at the lunchtime break but came out recharged and completed an excellent comeback 1-up win.

Di Webb collected her first club championship honour in style. She consigned Kath Papuni to a consecutive runner-up spot with a 6 and 5 win in the 18-hole final.

CONTRASTING paths produced the same outcome as the last two semifinals places were filled in the senior men’s club championships.

Rob Taylor brushed aside Ray Walford 5 and 4 to advance to a semifinal against top seed Rod Moore.

Sel Peneha needed an extra hole to see off Geoff Hill and book a last-four date with Brad Reynolds.

There were no upsets in the intermediate quarterfinals although a couple of the top four seeds went all the way. No.1 seed Danny Boyle beat Dave Harrison on the 18th while his semi opponent, fourth seed Anthony Pahina, also won on the 18th against Glen McKinnon.

There was no such pressure for No.2 seed Steve Phillips, who crushed Cliff Nepe 7 and 6. Next up for him is Derek Craven who beat Zach Rolls 3 and 2.

Junior top qualifier Barry Cox defeated Neal Jones on Tuesday to set up a semi with Dave Rameka, who ended Josh Hayes’ hopes 5 and 3 on Sunday. Wily vet Chris Palmer beat Pete Tamatea in their Tuesday semi. Tony Leggett, who ousted Paul Wellard 6 and 5 on Sunday, awaits Palmer.

WaikohuPERCY Milner applied the afterburners in the second 18 to win the intermediate men’s club championship on Sunday.

Milner beat Larry Green 7 and 6 in the 36-hole matchplay final after the pair went to lunch locked all-square.

The junior and endeavour titles are still to be decided.

Ike Ruru and Uma Chambers will clash in the junior final while Kahu Tamanui and Tom Smith face off in the endeavour division.

The women’s champs are yet to be played.

Poverty BaySOME would suggest that George Brown’s chance of making it past the first round of the men’s club champs sits somewhere been “fat” and “not a”.

Fair enough. The Scotsman takes on top seed Anaru Reedy in the first round of the senior men’s division and on last weekend’s qualifying scores this should be a stroll in the park for the lowest handicapped player in Poverty Bay-East Coast.

Stranger things, however, have happened in this beautifully unpredictable sport.

The pair were separated by a Gulf of Mexico-wide 26 shots after Saturday’s 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying, but matchplay is a leveller and Reedy won’t be taking Brown for granted.

Senior qualifying turned into a two-horse race between Reedy and Pete Anderson — both of who are chasing a first senior club champion crown.

Reedy got there in the end with a 2-under 142 (70, 72), three shots ahead of Anderson (70, 75).

Their rounds were similar in composition. They had nine birdies apiece over the 36 holes — eight each on the back which both played 4-under for the day.

The difference between them was one poor hole by Anderson — a triple-bogey 6 on the par-3 sixth after shanking his tee shot.

Reedy also experienced the dreaded “s” word off the tee on the par-3 11th but escaped with a 4.

Six shots behind Anderson in third was William Brown on 151 (75, 76). The greenkeeper was 1-under after 14 holes in his opening round but dropped four shots over the last four holes.

Simon Jeune was fourth on 152 (77, 75), with Stefan Andreassen fifth on 153 (75, 78).

There were six strokes back to defending champion and sixth qualifier Andrew Higham on 159 (82, 77).

Richard Foon grabbed the No.1 slot in the intermediate men’s 18-hole qualifying.

Foon and Neil Mackie, who is bidding for a third consecutive intermediate title, carded 79 but Foon got the top spot on countback.

Peter Hakiwai was third on 83 in scoring that went all the way down to 97 off the championship tees.

Basil Payne’s 90 earned him the junior No.1 qualifying slot, with Bill Simpson second on 92 and Warwick Thompson third on 93.

There were three qualifiers in the endeavour section. Club stalwart John Rouse (97) was the best of those, so advanced directly to the final, leaving Alan Baldwin and Noel Absalom to battle out the other berth.

Pete Anderson’s club championship qualifying efforts sealed victory in the Dodgshun Cup best-three-of-four-rounds gross series.

Anderson won the division 1 title and silverware while Andy Hayward won division 2 and Warwick Thompson division 3.

COUNTBACK decided the overall top qualifier in the women’s club championships.

Marg Colebourne earned the No.1 spot in the senior division, with Lynne Holmberg No.2 after both shot 86.

June MacKinnon is No.1 among the intermediate players while Odette Thompson is top seed in the juniors.

A back nine holes of 37 helped James Forrester to his equal-best round of the year. He won the men’s stableford with 80-19-61, for 41 points.

Doreen Goldsmith and Pauline Summersby won their Women’s Handicap Cup matches.

SeniorsNONAGENARIAN Nan Carmine and Gisborne Park’s Neal Jones had no idea they would be a victorious solution to a mystery in the Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village Vets Open tournament at Poverty Bay on Friday.

Forty-eight players took part in the Gisborne East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society tournament.

Format for the day was mystery drawn pairs stableford — the draw made at prize-giving.

Nan and Neal’s names were drawn together. Neal had 42 points and Nan 40 for nine holes. Her score was doubled giving them a total of 82.

It was good enough . . . just. They finished one point ahead of 9-holer Annabelle Sutton and Jean Foot, with Materoa Philip and Brian Hall third on 78.

Colleen Skuse posted the best individual score of the day — 98-29-69, for 43 points — with Jones second and Richard Foon and Margaret Williams next best on 41. Sutton’s 23 topped the 9-holers.

Representing the sponsor, Pip Griffin gave an update on the village, including the need for more homes to satisfy its growing waiting list.
