THE ever-popular Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs is under attack from a bunch of Park “newbies”.

With only a few days of qualifying left, the top three feature predominantly first-season members, including brothers Mike and Craig Christophers.

Mike was the star of the show as the siblings designated Saturday as their best-ball stableford qualifying round for the Te Kanawa.

Paired with Adrian Wyrill, Mike shot 83-19-64 — or as his brother put it, “the best game in his life” — as they racked up 48 points to rocket to the top of the qualifying ladder.

It was a busy sporting day for Poverty Bay rugby representative Wyrill, who swapped his golf shoes for footy boots and jumped the fence to Rugby Park for his Waikohu side’s premier club game against OBM that afternoon.

Craig and his partner — fellow Lytton High teacher and former Bay of Plenty first-class rugby player Matt Henwood — weren’t far behind Mike and Wyrill. They posted 45 points to be sitting third overall.

In between the brothers Christophers are Darrel Gregory and Graeme Dickey — another Park newcomer this season — who qualified with 46 points on May 7.

Organisers are hoping to have 24 pairs in this year’s competition. If that is the case, they are looking at the top eight advancing directly to the top 16 and the other 16 playing off for the remaining eight spots.

As of yesterday Cliff Nepe and Johnny Collier were occupying that eighth spot on countback on 41 points.

Yet to hit the fairways for their qualifying round were defending champions Anaru Reedy and Pete Tamatea.

The Benson Cup women’s pairs will be decided on Sunday. Kath Papuni and Jacque Akuhata-Nickerson face Jo Kerr and Mihi Marino.

While a bunch of clubmates were at Poverty Bay involved in interclub pennants, the door opened for Graeme Holland to pounce and win the men’s net.

Holland’s 93-18-75 was good enough for a one-stroke win from Mark Wiersma.
