Shaker John Love’s 2-1 win against the high-scoring Mike Price inspired promise, but Nizzy was having none of it as he stole the match-winner from Aubrey Ormond.
Rihara Moeke’s 2-1 victory over Tangi Hohipa and — wow! — Mia Leach’s 2-1 win over McRoberts made for a close-scoring match.
Men’s and women’s pairs tournamentLast Sunday, the Gisborne Club Darts Association men’s and women’s set pairs were hosted by the Gisborne Cosmopolitan Dart Adjunct. Thirteen men’s and seven women’s pairs registered. Tournament controllers, Puna McRoberts (men) and Di Leach (women), together with GCDA’s own techno-whizz, Ernst Spreiter, deserve a mention for their efficiency in allowing the tournament to be played in a very enjoyable atmosphere where laughter was aplenty and, win or lose, players maintained camaraderie.
Tutu’s player of the day would have to be none other than Ihaka Wynyard-Kaio. The nine-year-old arrived at the venue hoping to connect with some other partnerless player. Some might say he drew a short straw with Gary Harding but they smiled all day, sharing the spoils for runners-up envelope for the consolation, then Ihaka collecting the men’s 180 prize by being the only player to hit two maximums.
The women played a round robin to decide the honours. Runners-up were Lorna Wynyard and Nyoka Fox while Pauline “Hups” Haapu and Sha Hohipa took the title. Hups also grabbed the women’s high-finish prize with 88.
The men’s consolation went to Ryan Kirkland and Keith Hannam.
The men’s best-of-seven grand final was an enthralling spectacle enjoyed by those who did not leave early. Both pairs were consistently in form all day so deserved to be there.
Congratulations go to Lorenzo Kaa and Cris Kiri who beat Matt Reedy and Monty Reedy 4-2. Wayne Morrell hit a two-dart 107 to take the high-finish envelope.
