Before I talk about the game of the week, let me briefly recap on one asset crucial to an accomplished dart player’s arsenal.

This week, 2NZ 6-Shooter’s comfortable 9-6 victory over 2NZ McCannics was probably helped by Alf Cross when he managed four wins from four games. What was ironic, however, was that Cross had no trouble hitting the double but couldn’t three-dart a 100-plus score all night.

Phil “The Power” Taylor often puts it into context: “Stats for show, doubles for dough”.

Unlike the professionals, it’s not about the money.

The Roseland Tavern ventured on to 2NZ Rebel turf for what turned out to be a toughie.

Needing the final two single wins for the match, Roseland’s brothers-in-arms, Wayne and Kevin Morrell, completed a rearguard gasp to eke out an 8-7 away victory.

Early play belonged to the Rebels, with their point pairing of Charlie Reiri and Jesse Noa Noa securing three from three. Their mid-pairing of Lee Barbarich and Lorenzo Kaa added a fourth win.

Roseland’s mid-pairing of Mike Jones and Johnny Kingsbeer scored two victories off Barbarich and Kaa and anchor-pair Hupps Haapu and Tina Aspalter.

The anchoring Morrells also scored a brace over the same two Rebel pairings, while skipper Nigel Higham and John Collier added a single to give the visitors a 5-4 led at the break.

Fired up, the Rebels vanguard of Reiri and Noa Noa advanced their team to a 6-5 lead, with wins against Higham and Collier.

Jones levelled the score 6-6 with a close win against Barbarich. Young Rebel Lorenzo Kaa came back with a 2-0 victory over Kingsbeer to put Rebels 7-6 up but, as already mentioned, the Morrells brought the boat home for Roseland.

Finally, let’s spare a thought for the Cossy bar staff who were perhaps hoping for an early night that wasn’t to be.

Cossy B-Coz hosted the 2NZ Uawa Warriors. The match ended in a frustrating 8-7 win to the home team. Yeah — at 11pm!

I have it from a reliable source that the match was prolonged by repetitive double-trouble finishing. Two to win, to be more precise.
