GisborneA big turnout for Gisborne Bowling Club’s closing day and prizegiving on Saturday capped a stellar year for the club.

Three teams were unbeaten after 48 bowlers rounded off the season in a closely fought three-game triples contest.

Two teams finished with the same number of ends won and points for and against had to be employed to decide the winners.

The three Rs — Robin Jefferson (skip), Ron Robertson and Reg Hart — with 13 ends won and a points differential of plus 16, held off Arthur Hawes (s), Ashli Ferris and Bruce Smart by a whisker.

The Hawes combo, also with 13 ends won, had a points diff of plus 14.

With 11 ends won, Jamey Ferris (s), Anne Day and Murray Ferris were third.

At the conclusion of play, club president Rod McCulloch presented the club’s champions with medals, trophies and certificates and pointed out that, in a memorable season, Gisborne Club bowlers had won nine Gisborne East Coast champion of champions titles, five GEC centre titles and all six inter-club events.

The club’s most improved bowlers were Steve Ward and Margot Willock.
