Victory was hard-won for Kahutia Bowling Club in the Burnside Trophy Junior Interclub Tournament at the weekend.
The defending champions beat Poverty Bay 2-0 in the final, but both games went down to the wire – Kahutia won the first game 8-7 and the second, 7-6.
It was even closerin Kahutia’s semi-final, against Gisborne 1. A five-player, one-bowl shootout was needed to separate the teams.
The Kahutia team comprised the Pinn family – parents Geoff and Karen and twin brothers Kyle and Liam – along with Kelly Te Miha and Salvie Rickard.
Their opponents in the final were the Poverty Bay team of Anna Colvin, John Andrews, Jack Clark, BJ Seymour and Scott Amor, who earned their place in the decider with a 2-0 win against Te Karaka in the semi.
In the semi-final shootout against Gisborne 1, Liam Pinn opened for Kahutia by driving the jack into the ditch, with his toucher finishing just a metre away.
Gisborne’s John Donnelly responded with a brilliant draw, only for Te Miha to better it with an even closer shot.
Bowls from both skips fell just short, and the win was sealed for Kahutia.
They were playing for the Burnside Trophy, donated to Bowls Gisborne-East Coast by Burnside Bowling Club in Christchurch following Cyclone Gabrielle.
Kahutia have won two out of three junior interclub titles this season, their other success being the Yelverton Shield. Poverty Bay won the Peck Shield.
