“Awesome to see some new young faces in the YMP women’s side and Kowhai put up a good showing against a traditionally strong YMP.”
In the game that followed, runner-up in last year’s women’s competition, GMC Green, got a 1-0 win over LPSC Emerre and Hathaway Insurance Paikea.
“Both teams fought hard in what was a closely contested game,” Tupara said.
“GMC will be happy to come away with the win and Paikea will be stoked with their performance, in probably their closest ever encounter with the Green Machine.”
Saturday’s programme started in fine form for PGG Wrightson Ngatapa, which put 9 goals into the net against Gisborne Girls’ High School.
The students got 1 goal of their own in reply.
“The reigning women’s champions started the season in style with that big win,
“Girls’ High will want to build on their performance.”
Gisborne Boys’ High School started their season strongly too, with a 5-1 victory over YMP B in the first of the men’s games.
“The students were too strong for YMP B, but the B side will nevertheless be really pleased with that result,” Tupara said.
“Likewise, Boys’ High [will be pleased] with a lot of new players in the school’s fold.”
LPSC LOB Traktion overpowered their Masters side 10 to 1.
“Traktion proved too fit and strong for their clubmates in a match that was played in good spirit.”
Anthony Boyder scored seven of the Traktion goals.
“That was a real highlight of the game.”
In the final match of the opening weekend of the season, YMP A trounced Waituhi 8-1.
“YMP A scored most of their goals from counter-attacks,” Tupara said.
“They were strong across the Hain Farming Turf.
“Waituhi had some new faces in their lineup, and they will look to build on that performance as they develop their combinations.
“All teams will want to build on how they started the competition, now that we are underway.”
