The Giants superstock team made history for themselves and the Gisborne Speedway Club in winning the TWS/PTS 2026 Superstock Teams Champs Nationals at Waikaraka Park in Auckland at the weekend.

In doing so, it gave the Giants a perfect record of 14 wins from 14 races and all four superstock teams titles for 2025-2026.

The Giants comprised 2NZG Ethan Rees, 5G Josh Prentice, 96G Brad McGee, 144G Tim Ross, 126G Asher Rees and 235G Regan Penn.

“The team went to Auckland with a clear focus and aim to round out the season on a high,” team manager Scott Ross said.

The Giants accounted for the Bay Park Busters and the Palmerston North Panthers in qualifying, then took out the Rotorua Rebels on their way to a final against the Auckland All Stars.

“Qualifying was pretty clearcut for us,” Giants captain Ethan Rees said. “But we still had a couple of hard races against the Busters and the Panthers.

“Against the Rebels it was tougher. I ended up getting rolled, but Asher got through to win it well with Brad and Josh just behind him.”

Rees said the final was “brutal”.

“It was a very hard race. A real team effort from all of us secured the win. Asher got across the line first by maybe half the finish straight.

“I’m so proud of the team’s efforts, across all four events.”

Rees said it was particularly pleasing to have introduced new drivers this season in Sean Gooch, McGee and Penn.

“That has future-proofed the Giants.”

Rees said the team were already “really keen” for next season.

“We are going to continue building towards 2026-27.”

While it has not been confirmed, it has been reported that not since 1988 has a team won all superstock teams’ events throughout the country in the one season. The legendary Stratford Scrappers were the dominant force back then.

This season the Giants won the Superstock Teams Extravaganza at Robertson Prestige International Speedway in Palmerston North, Enzed Superstock Teams Championships at the same venue, Wanganui Warriors Teams Challenge at Oceanview Speedway and Superstock Teams Nationals at Waikaraka Park.

To cap a successful Waikaraka weekend, the superstock PTS $2000 winner-takes-all race was won by Penn.

Gisborne Speedway Club president Sam Hughes said it was an “unreal” result for the team and club.
