Takao said Girls’ High worked well as a team. They made fewer errors than in other games and, on attack, they got good ball into the shooters, who turned that possession into points.
“The defence did admirable work. YMP have the best shooter in the district — Paku-Jane Skudder — and Naomi Alovili and Kaipo Olsen-Baker were excellent in the circle for us.
“Wing defence Reace McBeth created some great pressure outside the circle that enabled Naomi and Kaipo to clean up close to the goal.
“Georgia Allen played superbly at wing attack. She was able to diversify her game and get good ball into our shooters.
“Princess Tomoana, as usual, was outstanding in the attacking circle. I’m a happy coach today.”
Netball commentator Sherrill Beale said while YMP were missing key players — among those midcourters Ata Mangu and Hine Hubbard — there were some good match-ups including Skudder and Alovili, and centres Renee Wikaire (YMP) and Hannah Veitch.
In last night’s other game, Claydens Waikohu produced a strong performance to beat Horouta Gold 59-40. They led at each break — 15-10, 28-19 and 45-28.
“Waikohu were more settled tonight and moved the ball through the court well,” Beale said.
“Goal shoot Ariz Ruru gave the team a target to get the ball to. She missed a few shots but the attackers delivered some good ball into her.
“Ruby Tuapawa, at goal defence, had another good game for Waikohu. She hunted the ball and collected some good intercepts. She works well with Ani Tiko at goal keep.”
Beale said Horouta Gold tried several combinations but could not pull Waikohu back.
Waikohu coach Cheryl Te Rito was delighted with the performance.
“The girls played a very well-controlled game,” she said. “We have been working on slowing down our play and focusing more on keeping our ball.
“We have welcomed Ariz back with open arms. She was awesome last night, and so was Ruby.
“But the whole team played well, which was great to see.”
