TIGHT games were the order of Day 2 at softball’s Division 2 North Island Secondary Schools’ Championships in Gisborne.

Gisborne Boys’ High School beat Palmerston North Boys’ High School 5-4 yesterday and were top of their group at the halfway point of the tournament at Waikirikiri Park this week.

They also looked sharp against Hastings Boys’ High School, winning 7-3.

Hastings Boys’ High had a tight win against Fraser High School, 7-6.

Little separated the top three teams in the boys’ Section B at the end of Day 2 — Te Aute College were one point ahead of St Peter’s College Auckland, who were a point above Napier Boys’ High School.

Whanganui High School were on the end of two tight losses yesterday — 13-12 to Napier Boys’ High and 11-9 to St Peter’s. Their girls, however, beat Tolaga Bay Area School and Kahukuranui 12-10.

Hamilton Girls’ High School prevailed in a crunch game over Westlake Girls’ High School, 7-6.

No softball was played this morning because of rain and drizzle. Officials were hoping play could get under way at 3.30pm.
