Full set of medals for Gisborne rowers

Gisborne rowers Cody Wright and Oscar Ruston won gold and silver at the North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro last Friday.

Competing for Gisborne Boys’ High School, they won the boys’ under-16 double sculls by over two seconds from a Macleans College crew from Auckland.

Wright and Ruston also joined Sacha Dewancker, Eliarn Destounis and coxswain Harry Naske to take the silver medal in the boys’ u16 coxed quad sculls, finishing just under two seconds behind the winning Hamilton Boys’ High crew and less than a second in front of third-placed St Peters College.

Dewancker added bronze to his personal haul by finishing third in the boys’ u16 single sculls. In a close final, he was less than half a second behind the second placegetter, from Macleans College, who in turn was less than two seconds behind the winner, from Trident High School in Whakatane.

Other Gisborne Boys’ High finalists were —

• The boys’ u18 coxless pair (Ben McCosh and Isaac Kinder): seventh in the A Final.

• The boys’ u17 coxed eight (Ben McCosh, Isaac Kinder, Thom Simmons, Sebastian Solomann, Cody Wright, Oscar Ruston, Sacha Dewancker, Joshua Kelly and coxswain Harry Naske): seventh in the A Final.

• The boys’ u17 coxed four (Ben McCosh, Isaac Kinder, Sebastian Solomann, Joshua Kelly and coxswain Harry Naske): seventh in the A Final.

• The boys’ u17 coxed quad (Isaac Kinder, Sebastian Solomann, Oscar Ruston, Joshua Kelly and coxswain Harry Naske): third in the B Final.

• The boys’ u16 single sculls (Oscar Ruston): third in the B Final.

Highlight of the Gisborne Girls’ High School effort at the championships was the A Final bronze-medal finish earned by the girls’ u18 novice coxed quad sculls. They were: Leah Scholefield, Caitlin Bregmen, Sabine Lapointe, Jemma Honey and coxswain Jess Wright.

The girls’ u16 double sculls crew of Phoebe Naske and Hannah Veitch finished fifth in the A Final.

Also in an A Final were the girls’ u18 novice double sculls crew of Leah Scholefield and Caitlin Bregmen, who finished seventh.

The girls’ u15 coxed quad sculls (Keeley Cairns, Sabine Lapointe, Olivia Proffit, Claudia Shanks and coxswain Pippa Jones) were sixth in the B Final.

In the girls’ u17 single sculls, Eva Mirko was seventh in the B Final. In the girls’ u17 double sculls, she and Presley Gibson were fifth in the C Final.

A Campion College crew (David Levy and Ben Blakeman) won the B Final of the boys’ u18 novice double sculls.
