FOR the second weekend in a row rugby matches around the region were marred by serious injuries. Four players were transported to Gisborne Hospital for treatment.

The chopper flew to Nuhaka on Saturday afternoon to attend to a 23-year-old man who had been injured in a tackle.

“He was flown to Gisborne Hospital with a suspected leg fracture,” a St John ambulance spokesman said.

A player in one of the Hurricanes secondary school festival games at the Rectory Field was taken to hospital in an ambulance with an injury.

Two Pirates players were taken to hospital in the match against High School Old Boys at the Oval. One was suffering from concussion and the other had a serious knee injury.

“It’s just one of those unfortunate things that happens from time to time,” the ambulance spokesman said.

“Every now and again we do get a run of serious sports injuries.”

• The ECT rescue helicopter flew two men and a girl to hospital the previous weekend with injuries after mishaps at East Coast matches.
