THE 1-1 draw between Paikea and Ngatapa in the women's games and Lytton Old Boys Masters' first win of the season in the men's division were the highlights of weekend hockey.

Ngatapa left it till the last minute to level things in their clash with Paikea.

“Paikea scored just before halftime,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“In the second half, Ngatapa enjoyed most of the possession, but the Ladies in Pink held them out till a penalty corner was awarded to Ngatapa almost on fulltime.

“They scored from it to level things.

“It was great to see a nice close contest between those teams,” Scragg said.

“Either side could have won it.”

LOB Masters and YMP B fought out a good contest in the men's grade before the old hands came out on top 4-1, with the LOB goals going to Matt Skuse (2), Matt King and Ethan Rogers.

“YMP B lacked a few players again, and the Masters took full advantage,” Scragg said.

“It was 1-1 for a while but in the end the player numbers told the story.”

In the women's grade, INA Contracting GMC Green beat GMC Kowhai 12-0, with a hat-trick to Shannon Williams. Three other players each scored two goals.

“It just shows the dominance of the Green Machine in the women's competiton,” Scragg said.

Amber Dental Gisborne Girls' High School beat Te Aowera 13-0, Keeley Smiler scoring five goals and Chloe Kapene, four.

“TA lost their goalkeeper after the first quarter through injury and that made a big difference,” Scragg said.

YMP B had a good 2-1 victory over Waituhi.

“That was the other outstanding women's match last weekend,” Scragg said.

“It was 1-1 for some time in a match that was up for grabs right through.

“Credit to YMP B for their fourth win of the season.”

In the men's games Lytton Old Boys HPY Advisors bounced back from their loss to YMP A to beat Waituhi 9-1.

Aaron Whitehead scored five of the goals and Jed Skuse got a hat-trick.

“The scoreline looks good for LOB, but Waituhi played without a goalkeeper for the whole match — both of their keepers were unwell,” Scragg said.

“Bearing that in mind, the LOB win was not that convincing.

“They will need to recraft some of their attack.”

YMP A defeated Gisborne Boys' High School 5-0 in the final game of the weekend.

“It was a case of too much YMP class against the youth of the students,” Scragg said.

“YMP A were just too good for them and it just shows the depth of talent right across the YMP team.”
