OBR handed Gisborne Boys' High School their first defeat of the season in Doleman Cup cricket on Saturday.

The victory was a team effort for Coastal Concrete OBR, whose batsmen, bowlers and fielders all chipped in.

Galaxy World GBHS batted first and scored 158 off their 40 overs.

OBR replied with 159-6 in 34.3 overs.

Boys' High wanted to bat a full innings but the game plan seemed to work against them, as they were too passive. The team stagnated in the middle of their innings as they struggled to kick it up a gear after drinks.

Four OBR bowlers conceded under 3.5 runs an over as they chipped away at GBHS, never letting the batsmen settle into a good partnership.

Captain Ian Loffler took three wickets for 24 runs off his eight overs. His spin bowling slowed the pace of the game, which suited OBR.

The first five Boys' High batsmen made good starts, but none were able to push on and score a significant total.

Josiah Turner top-scored with 26, while three other batsmen had totals in the low 20s.

Boys' High coach Mal Trowell said he thought the team lost their way in the last 20 overs.

“We were a bit tentative and kept wickets in hand when we could've made a bit of a push.

“Another 20 or 30 runs and it would have been a different ball game.”

OBR captain Ian Loffler said his team bowled good line and length, which stifled the Boys' High batsmen.

“Cody (Andrews) has a bit of pace,” he said.

“He got a little bit close at times and put pressure on to see how the young guys coped with that.

“The game was played in a really good spirit . . . hard but fair.”

He said it was always going to be a tough game. OBR were without several of their key players and had to use replacements from their Senior B team. He, himself, had to play wicketkeeper.

“It was always going to a tough game for us with those four missing players, especially when you've got Dad's Army out there wicketkeeping.”

OBR took a slow-and-steady approach to their innings. Their experience was evident as they cruised to the required total with four wickets and five and a half overs to spare.

Faced with a constant flow of runs, Boys' High responded with tenacious bowling and fielding that kept them in the game for much of the OBR innings,

Just after drinks, OBR were 76-5.

Loffler said the game was in the balance for a while after they lost a couple of cheap wickets, but the leadership of Josh Blair and Andrews got them over the line.

The left-and-right-handed combination of Andrews and Blair brought up a 53-run partnership to finish the game. They steadied the ship after Boys' High had looked to rally when they took the wicket of Dane Thompson for one run just after they took Loffler's wicket.

As the game wore on, Boys' High started making mistakes in the field, and had a few unlucky breaks.

OBR were playing dangerous shots, but the ball always fell just out of reach of the fielders or in safe areas.

Several chances and half-chances were dropped, which left the Boys' High players dejected and prone to errors at the end of the game.

They did all they could to defend their total, but Loffler's field placements in their innings had restricted them to a total that wasn't big enough.

“Boys' High were pretty tough,” Loffler said.

“We're just happy to come away with the win.”
