Gymnastics runs in some families, and this was evident at Gisborne Gymnastics Club’s annual competition last weekend.

Head coach Nicola Ludwig said she ran the competition for the first time 18 years ago, shortly after she started coaching for the club.

“It was very small as we had to establish it as an event,” she said.

“Over the years we grew and had some successful and very large events here.”

Ludwig was touched by the loyalty of the Walters family, she said.

Tiffany Walters was Level 6 champion in 2000. She wasn’t competing last weekend; she was supporting her niece, new Step 1 champion Capria Tamatea.

Capria also won the floor and was third on uneven bars.

“It will be a few years before Tiffany is supporting the event as a mum; her daughter is only one,” Ludwig said.
