“I expect to be out for six months, so unfortunately my racing is over for the season.”
The other injury came in the Jukes Carriers ramp race demolition derby, near the end when almost all of the 24 competing cars had been knocked out.
“Craig Williams was hit from behind by one of the few remaining cars, became trapped and had to be cut out of the vehicle by Fire and Emergency NZ,” Simpson said.
Firefighters from the Gisborne station were called to do it.
Williams was taken to Gisborne Hospital for observation.
The demolition derby was won by Logan Kingi, who pocketed $1000 for outlasting the rest of the field, with Bruce Williams the second-to-last man standing. He received $500.
Cole Le Compte picked up the $250 prize money for being the best “stirrer”.
The stockcar brigade turned on a powerful display across three heats to decide the outcome of the Sam's Upholstery Ashley Scott Memorial stockcar title.
It was won by Jason Jones (81G), who had won it twice before.
“It was pretty tight, just a point in it between Jordan Fleetwood (16G) and me,” Jones said.
He scored 71 points across the three heats, Fleetwood 70 and David Kingsbeer (38G) 68.
“I had two thirds and a fifth, so consistency paid off,” Jones said.
“It was hard work out there, but worth it.”
The three heat winners were Dylan Pickering (56G), James Clarke (29G) and Mason O'Dwyer (99G).
The Phil Walsh Memorial production saloon car title was won by Sean Robertson (16G).
Robertson was “Mr Consistent” with two wins and a second across the three heats.
Simpson said the meeting drew a reasonable crowd and produced excellent racing across all classes.
