PAUL Stewart made sure it was a double celebration at home on Saturday night when he was named man of the match in Gisborne Boys’ High School’s five-wicket win against Horouta.

His father Peter was in the Pirates team who had an upset victory over High School Old Boys in Doleman Cup cricket at Harry Barker Reserve.

The old saying “catches win matches” rang true in the Boys’ High-Horouta game, as both sides had fielding lapses.

Horouta were all out for 118.

Club captain Greg Taylor said the fielding in the game left both teams with a lot to do at training.

Boys’ High won the toss and captain Drew Scott put Horouta in to bat.

“The pitch looked as though it might have a bit of moistuare in it, and we bowled well,” Scott said.

“We had Horouta at 38-4. We let them get away a bit after that but came back strongly towards the end.”

Keegan Martin scored 33 runs to celebrate his inclusion in the Poverty Bay team that played Hawke’s Bay yesterday.

Vaughan Thompson (23 runs) and Tushar Balat (18) also featured in the fightback.

Medium-pacer Paul Stewart, who later also scored a valuable 10 not out, took three wickets for 15 runs off eight overs, while medium-pacer Zeppo Page and off-spinner Peter Kapene each collected two wickets.

Blake Taylor struck in the first over of the Boys’ High innings, sending Peter Kapene back to the pavilion before a second-wicket partnership from Scott (55) and Matt McNeil (33) set the school team up for the win.

“Had we adopted the catches-win-matches mantra, the result could well have been different,” Greg Taylor said.

“We grassed nine catches, although we did hold three.”

GBHS 119-5 (D Scott 55, M McNeil 33; K Martin 2-7, P Jethwa 2-28) def Horouta 118 (K Martin 33, V Thompson 23; P Stewart 3-15, Z Page 2-18, P Kapene 2-20).

Bain Construction OBR made it two wins from two, dismissing Campion College for 44 runs in only eight overs.
