Lefties were all the rage at Harry Barker Reserve on Saturday.
Martin Worndl, with 62, carried his bat for Coastal Concrete Old Boys Rugby in their seven-wicket win against Bollywood High School Old Boys, and the bowling of Gisborne Boys’ High School First XI orthodox spin twins Jordyn Haleyand Charlie Whitfield set up their crew’s victory by six wickets over Moshim’s Spice Horouta Te Waka.
Hansa Fernando of Horouta had earlier seen off GBHS spearhead Caleb Taewa, yet another leftie, and got to 46 before he became Haley’s third victim.
In the second innings, Gisborne Boys’ young titan Patrick McInnes, with 38 from 37 balls, pinched the winning single for the Whitfield-led side who now, like HSOB, have two wins after three rounds of the Premier Grade 40-over Doleman Cup cricket competition.
Both the OBR v HSOB clash on the representative wicket and GBHS v Te Waka on ground 1 were low-scoring yet absorbing games.
Every other batter was bowled or adjudged out lbw to the spinners.
Haley (13) and Joel Kirkpatrick (28) put on 46 before Te Waka’s Baljeet Singh (2/14 in four overs), on at first-change, bowled Haley.
Ten balls later Gayesha Mahabalage (1) was out lbw to Singh but the next partnership was worth 33 to GBHS before Kirkpatrick was run out.
Arun Babu, the sixth and last bowler used by Te Waka, trapped Jett Whitaker (4 off 17 balls) lbw with the score at 103.
McInnes brought up the victory off Sareen’s first ball of the 25th over.
Jagroop Singh was fulsome in his praise of the Steve Whitaker-coached side.
“Gisborne Boys’ played excellent cricket and were well ahead of Horouta in all facets of play – bowling, fielding and batting. Jordyn and Patrick were phenomenal.”

OBR’s Matthew Cook put HSOB in to bat and Nathaniel Fearnley (19) and Akira Makiri (9) produced 38 as a pair before seamer Franco Ludwig (2/31 in four overs) had Makiri caught by Cook at mid-on.
Alex Shanks (22) and captain Taye McGuinness (30) advanced the score from 49 to 91 before firebrand Bekko Page (1/22 in seven overs) had Shanks caught by gloveman Jarrod Ormiston.
The return of Ormiston and Page from university and the prospect of both being in the frame for Poverty Bay Under-19 selection, along with GBHS left-arm seamer Johnathon Gray, is an exciting one.
Off-spinner Daniel Stewart took 2/31 in 5.1 overs but bustling medium-pacer Zyden Worsnop, his side’s sixth option, was the star of the show for OBR in the first innings. He took 3/6 off three overs.
HSOB posted 127/8 in 29.1 overs, a total perhaps 30-40 runs fewer than they might have hoped for.
In the chase, former Czech Republic representative Worndl was watchful and selective in a quality partnership of 59 for the second wicket with Page (29).
Page pulled left-arm orthodox spinner Riker Rolls (0/33 in six overs) over mid-wicket for six and also belted three fours in his lively 21-ball stay. Worndl drove opening bowler Connor Starck (0/25 in 5.3 overs) for four through mid-on three balls into the 27th over to bring up the win.
OBR skipper Cook had reason to be pleased with their first Doleman Cup win of the season.
“Our bowlers kept a good line and length and four of them were rewarded with wickets, though Jimmy Holden was unlucky not to grab one with the new ball. He beat the bat a lot,” he said. “Martin showed patience in the second innings, keeping out the good ball, while putting away anything loose.
“Bekko is a very powerful hitter of the ball. The six he hit was the biggest I’ve seen for a long time.”
